No cost, low cost ways to save energy

Happy paying your gas and electricity supplier more money than you need to? Thought not. Here are some 'no cost, low cost' ways to save energy and money.

You can also contact the Energy at Home Advice Service to find out more ways to save energy, make your home warmer, lower your energy bills and discover any other support that's available.

Give your clothes a day in the sun

Give your tumble drier a break. Clothes dried in the fresh air feel great, and there are drying days in winter too.

Don't leave phones charging all night

Most phones charge in about three hours - also try not to leave other appliances like the TV and radio on standby.

NO

COST

Only boil as much water as you need

When boiling water, only fill the kettle with as much as you'll actually use (but make sure you cover the metal element at the base).

Dimmer is certainly smarter

Use your dimmer switches to reduce the amount of energy used to light your rooms.

NO

COST

Wait until you have a full load

Wait until you have a full load of washing before putting on a wash. Two half-loads use more energy (and water) than one full load.

DIY draught proofing

Fit draught excluders to your windows, front door, letter box and key hole, and draw your curtains at dusk to keep the heat in.

LOW

Install secondary glazing

Choose from a range of low cost, but effective secondary glazing options. Fit plastic sheets over the window frame to seal draughts.

Turn your heating down by 1 degree

You'll hardly notice the change in temperature, but it will make a big difference to your heating bill.
